HIV Track
The goal of the HIV track is to train leaders in the field of HIV medicine through a rigorous structured curriculum, clinical experiences, and scholarly work. Fellows in the HIV track have the opportunity to work with UCSF faculty who are global leaders in HIV clinical care, research, and education.
The HIV Track can be done as part of the 2-year Clinician Educator Track or the 3-year Research Track, depending on fellow interests and goals. The following elements are key track components for the upper years of ID Fellowship. Each fellow would develop a tailored plan based on these core experiences in order to support their individual career goals.
Formal Coursework and Conferences
- All fellows would participate in the Ward 86 Fellows’ curriculum, a weekly pre-clinic conference covering the basics of HIV resistance, OIs, pivotal ARV trials, and report- backs from major HIV conferences
- All fellows attend the Medical Management of HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis CME Conference, a CME course organized by the Division of HIV, ID, and Global Medicine at ZSFG
- All fellows attend the annual Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) meeting (and are funded to attend)
- Fellows also often attend IDWeek and the International AIDS Society conference
- Fellows in the Research track may pursue additional training in research methodology, if desired
- Fellows in the Clinician Educator track may pursue additional training in medical education, if desired
Clinical Work
- Weekly HIV continuity clinic at Ward 86 at ZSFG
- Fellows in the Clinician Educator track may have additional HIV continuity clinic experiences at UCSF Health and SFVAMC
- Participation in Ward 86 clinical programs based on fellow interest, with focus areas such as long-acting ART, HIV and aging, HIV and homelessness, and PrEP
- Additional subspecialty ambulatory experiences based on fellow interest, such as HIV specialty clinics (e.g. pulmonary, dermatology, psychiatry, cardiology, endocrinology), Hepatitis Clinic, City Clinic (STDs), and addiction medicine experiences
- Inpatient ID consult time at both ZSFG and UCSF Health
Scholarly Work
Fellows will participate in a mentored scholarly project in HIV medicine. For Research track fellows, this can be in the area of clinical, translational, or basic science research. For Clinician Educator fellows, this is usually a clinical research and/or quality improvement project.
